Social Media- Position Paper 3

Social media started in the early 2000s. Over time, social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are built for the better nowadays. Every social media website was enhanced to be technology-friendly as well as to provide resources to a brand and the brand's promotion. The importance of social media use for political communication has shown how essential and beneficial it is for interest groups and candidates for the 2020 election. It is a proven fact that social media has increased views about politics.  Social media and politics together have made others express themselves and speak directly about minor and major issues since the year 2012.

If we look at the way politicians communicate in the present, we’ll see how different they communicate compared to 10 years ago. Social media plays an epic role in why politicians communicate differently in today's world of politics. According to research, politicians have never had such access to their public supporters until social media partnered with the political world. Social media is essential to many aspects of networking and promoting. Networking and promoting political events over social media have increased usage, in other words, social media has leveled up in its access to politics and politicians.

Those who are immune to following politics and politicians the traditional way (Television Broadcast, News, Newspapers, Magazines, etc.) may question whether social media networks like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat are good platforms to use for updates? The answer is yes. The reason why is because your favorite politician or your favorite politician's campaign party share and repost things all the time. Politicians are aware that social media is an advantage that can consistently be used to reach the goal of winning a campaign. There is almost 70% of us who use social media every day, and with that 70%, many people are most likely to see and view a politician’s post.

It is always important for Politicians to enhance their social media presence. Campaign candidates like Joe Biden interact with their social media followers as much as possible. Biden feels that it is important to interact with as many of his supporters, as well as posting relevant content regarding his campaign. Though Donald Trump isn't the friendliest tweeter or social media engager, his posts attract him a bigger audience, shockingly Trump entertains many of his supporters and non-supporters through his Twitter by being blunt, disturbing, and rude.

Joe Biden does spend time on social media, but not as much as Donald Trump. According to research, politicians being silent on social media most of the time is a wise choice. Though Joe doesn’t tweet or post as much he does interact with his supporters on social media every chance he gets. Joe Biden is working on being in the media as a profession overall. Sources say that Biden’s campaign team is setting up an interview for Joe Biden with one of the world's most famous actress, KeKe Palmer who has over one million followers on social media. It is good marketing for Joe Biden and his team connecting with famous actress Keke Palmer because it will connect her many fans and followers with Joe Biden.

Though Joe Biden doesn't use his social media personally most of the time, he does have a social media director for his campaign. Sarah Galvez is Joe Biden's social media director and from the work, I've seen she is very good at what she does. She wakes up at 6 am to start putting out content for Biden's campaign and she also works with other social media experts to keep Biden connected in the social media world. Her credentials as a social media director has been relevant to the political world and entertainment industry. According to research, Galvez has worked with YouTube creators at Disney's Maker Studios, with Hillary Clinton, and many others. I must say I was concerned about Joe being up in age and not exactly knowing how to project on his social media websites, but what's to worry about when you have younger people in your corner working for you and being masterminds at things like social media, right?

As far as who is Trump’s social media director, well two years ago it was Dan Scavino, but right now it is unknown now whether he still is or not. Trump uses his social media personally very often as seen on Twitter. As I stated before Trump's social media posts aren't as friendly as others. Trump is what we would call a 'Social Media Troll'. Some may feel that it's just social media and Trump has the right to express how he feels just like any other Twitter or Facebook users, but the reality is the President of the United States should be more thoughtful about how he says things because the world is watching. Four months ago, Donald Trump himself made a threat to shut down all social media platforms, a commenter on YouTube said “As if Trump would shut down social media. He spends most of his life on Twitter!”. I found most comments hilarious and relevant overall. An executive order was also put out for social media after Trump made such a statement.

From my perspective, I feel as if Joe Biden and Donald Trump are great examples of how you should and shouldn't market over social media. I honestly think that social media helps show whose concerned about what matters versus whose concerned about their perspective. Due to an overload of political posts, many Americans are becoming drained from politics. I can see and understand why. We have been in quarantine, we have also seen many acts of injustice, and we are currently in one of the most trying years. There is a sense of exhaustion rather than excitement for this year's presidential election. The positive thing is that many people are getting out and going to vote like never before due to promotion on social media.
